OPERATOR OF ‘DODGY BOX’ SERVICE JAILED FOR 16 MONTHS

A 42-year-old man from Kildare in Ireland has been jailed for 16 months for operating an illegal ‘dodgy box’ TV streaming service and possession of over €900,000 in criminal proceeds from the business.

Ciaran Donovan operated King Kong Media, a company providing an illegal streaming service, enabling access to paid TV channels such as Sky Sports and BT Sports. Ciaran pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing the proceeds of crime contrary to the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010, following an investigation initiated by Sky TV's anti-piracy unit.

Donovan has been sentenced to three years and four months on the charges, with the final two years suspended for a period of 30 months on a number of conditions.
